LAYHER CONSTRUCTION OF LOOKOUT TOWER FOR THE EUROPEAN CAPITAL OF CULTURE 2023

The unique design of the lookout tower was assembled in the first half of February from elements of the Layher Allround and Layher Event systems. All hardware for the installation of the structure was provided by the JSA Stage Company. The structure with a height of about 27 (side dimensions – 9.5 m x 9.5 m.) was installed on Victory Square in the center of Timisoara. This year, this ancient city in Romania became the European Capital of Culture 2023.

Turnul  Layher – “Grădina Verticală” din Piața Victoriei. Timișoara, Capitală Europeană a Culturii, 2023.

This lookout tower is an original art object in the central historical part of the city (Romanian spelling – Timișoara), which attracts the attention of numerous tourists and city residents. It is the third largest city in Romania, the center of the Banat region. The industrial city of Timisoara is famous for an important event: in 1989, there began popular uprisings against the dictatorial regime of Nicolae Ceausescu and, in general, against the Communist rule in the country. Today Romania is a member of the European Union, actively developing and restoring its historical heritage.

Cities that will become cultural capitals are chosen in Europe every year. In 2023, the Romanian Timișoara, the Greek Elefsis, and the Hungarian Veszprem got this role. Cultural capitals attract a huge number of tourists. Festivals, exhibitions, concerts, and fairs are organized there throughout the year. The tall tower is the main visible symbol which will constantly symbolize the city’s status this year.

The concept of the facility is based on an ecological idea. Therefore, the products of the Layher plant, which meet all standards of use and safety, were chosen for its installation. In addition, a special appearance and a cozy atmosphere inside are created by young trees, bushes, and other vegetation installed on five floors.

The design based on Layher systems made possible the creation of a “Vertical Garden” in the center of the European Capital of Culture.

JSA Stage Company specialists developed a special design of staircases for visitors to enter the tour and climb to the top floor in the central part of this towering structure. It was created based on the standard Layher Allround ladder system but with an original use of different elements.

The official opening for visiting the tower took place on February 17, 2023. An incredible high-tech facility in the city center immediately aroused great interest. There is a queue to climb to the upper platform for the surrounding view, especially on weekends. Sound equipment is installed inside the structure to create a musical background. And in the evening, lights are turned on, creating beautiful images of the towering structure. The main art object of the European Capital of Culture will be open to guests and residents of the city until the end of this autumn.

❤️ JSA is proud to participate in the creation and production of this interesting project in Romania. It opens up new opportunities for business development.

Many thanks to Salt Box Studio for the invitation to take part in this event and special thanks to Adrian Vișenoiu for the positive business cooperation.

Thanks to the guys from ABT Motion Rigs – Stage Mechanics – Rigging for a well-done job with installing the Layher for this temporary construction.

Special thanks to the Layher Baltic division for facilitating this project.

Above we present an interesting collage of pictures from different years. The 1997 towers are the first Layher designs that JSA installed 26 years ago. The installation of three such towers was made for an unforgettable show by Jean Michel Jarre “Oxygen in Moscow”. The 2023 shots are of the Layher tower from JSA, which was installed in February in Timisoara (Romania). The “first” towers and the tower of this year are almost the same height – about 27 meters, which was the reason for the analogy of two types of structures installed in different years with a long distance in time.

Most of the photos are by Alexander Strizhak, some by Adrian Vișenoiu (Salt Box Studio), and a few from ABT Motion and OAR / Filiala Timiş on their Facebook pages.

By the way, the photos of 1997 were taken on film, the photos of 2023, are digital, of course.
