ROGER WATERS’ “DARK SIDE OF THE MOON” ON PALACE SQUARE IN ST. PETERSBURG

On June 6, 2008, a unique concert of the legendary Roger Waters, one of the founders, bass guitarist, vocalist and author of many songs of the iconic group “Pink Floyd”, took place on Palace Square in St. Petersburg. The three-hour performance of the famous rock musician took place as part of the cultural program of the XII St. Petersburg International Economic Forum. A bright impressive show with the magical name “The dark side of the moon” was presented on the large stage installed by the JSA company.

The set list consisted of songs from the Pink Floyd album of the same name – “The Dark Side Of The Moon”, as well as compositions from the albums “Wish You Were Here”, “The Wall”, one song from “Animals”, “Obscured By Clouds” and “The Final Cut”, plus several solo songs by Roger Waters. The artist began the concert at almost nine o’clock in the evening and finished exactly at midnight.

The organizers of the unique event in St. Petersburg invited JSA to build a special stage and the necessary additional structures. The company’s specialists installed a stage measuring 30×20 m and over 18 m high on Palace Square. Support walls for screens were installed on the sides. The total length of this stage complex was about 60 m. The stage structure was assembled from elements of Layher systems. The design featured a Layher steel cassette roof that housed pyro and fire effects.

Roger Waters paid special attention to the fact that all the audience members without exception could hear all the sound special effects. For this occasion, the artist’s production team brought the famous sound quad system, which creates the feeling of complete immersion in the musical space. Therefore, the JSA company additionally installed eight structures of 12-meter towers along the perimeter of Palace Square.

Despite the vagaries of the St. Petersburg weather in the form of periodic drizzle, the performance of legendary Pink Floyd compositions, the original show script and spectacular quadraphonic sound, all this will leave this concert in the memory of St. Petersburg residents and guests of the “Northern Capital” for a long time. Roger Waters’ original show on Palace Square attracted more than 50,000 fans of his work, as well as participants and guests of the St. Petersburg Economic Forum. The public was particularly interested in the appearance of a flying pig – the signature symbol of Roger Waters’ performances. On the sides of the giant white inflatable pig were two famous phrases in Russian: “За вашу и нашу Свободу! (For your and our Freedom!)” and “Не плачь, не бойся, не проси! (Don’t cry, don’t be afraid, don’t ask!)”

This was the second staging by JSA for Roger Waters’ concert in Russia. The world-famous music of the Pink Floyd hit composer had previously sounded from the JSA stage in 2006 on Vasilyevsky Spusk of Red Square in Moscow. At that time, the JSA team was responsible for the full production and logistics of the concert.
