JSA STEEL MOUNTAINS FOR COMPETITION SNOWBOARDING

JSA has many years of experience and skills in the construction of large and high structures, erected specifically for competitions and sports shows in such disciplines as snowboarding and freestyle skiing. Such structures have different names – Snow Ramp, Jumping Hill, “Tramplin”, Man-made Slope or Steel Mountain. One way or another, this is a serious engineering object with a special geometric design and the necessary infrastructure.

To promote JSA’s ability to install such structures, we provide a simple presentation on the topic below.

INTRODUCTION

Holding bright and large-scale sporting events has long been part of the world sports culture. It has become an integral factor of life and entertainment. Such shows attract the attention of not only sports fans but also represent a significant economic and social factor for countries and cities.

Usually, these events do not take place in stadiums and special stationary structures but require the installation of temporary structures for competitions, spectator stands, and infrastructure facilities to service events in various extraordinary locations.

Over the past decades, the use of temporary structures for various sports activities and sports shows has increased significantly. Installations of structures occur on city streets and squares, in iconic and well-known places, or where there is no possibility and feasibility of building a permanent facility.

STARTING STAGE

One of the areas of such sports shows is holding competitions and shows in snowboarding and some skiing disciplines.

JSA has extensive experience in installing temporary structures for such events. We have been successfully implementing such projects since 1997. The first installations of snow ramps were in the late 90s of the last century. These were small ramps, as a special additional part on natural slopes of the hills.

Then our team took part in the installation of structures, including the ramp for the snowboard show as part of the Ballantine’s Urban High world promotional tour. In this project, we gained our first experience in constructing such a design, which was subsequently greatly developed.

And already in 2002 the company built the first big construction for the legendary sport event – Nokia Totally Board. After the successful holding of this event, the installation of “steel mountains” became a separate area of the company’s activity.

The next stage in the development of the direction of installation of temporary structures of artificial “mountain slopes” was the holding of competitions in the Big Air classification in snowboarding.

LAYHER & CONSTRUCTION

The scale of the competitions and the required dimensions of the structure grew every year. The purpose of the structure also changed – from special promotional shows for advertising international brands to holding sports competitions of the World Cup stages in snowboarding and freestyle skiing. The design of the ramp was constantly modified, creating better conditions for athletes, judges, service personnel and the public.

By installing such huge structures, the company gained extensive experience in using scaffolding as a building material. JSA entered the construction industry to some extent. This happened thanks to many years of successful cooperation with the Layher plant – a manufacturer of modern scaffolding systems. Since 1997, the company has used mainly only Layher products in its activities. A direct partnership with the German plant was established in 1999 and continues to this day.

ENGINEERING AND DESIGN

During the preparation, installation, and holding of the events, the JSA production team always works in cooperation with the show and competition organizers. The company receives a technical assignment from them, and our specialists make engineering calculations and drawings and discuss the ramp design for various types of competitions. Sometimes, we involve engineers from Layher for complex projects. Static calculations are made by third-party specialized design bureaus. After installation and before dismantling, we provide service and supervision of the structure’s condition and correct use. This is especially true for the snow loads of the playing field.

PRODUCTION TEAM

JSA has extensive experience in installing temporary structures of “Steel Mountains” or “Snow Ramps”, including negotiating event details, planning, design, site assignment, logistics and production management of such projects. We also have a team of key specialists and professional installers (scaffolders) who have taken part in the construction of such structures. The team has knowledge of installation details, skills and experience in working in extreme conditions. Projects of this kind are exclusive and complex in their own way and JSA is ready for such challenges!
